There are many products sold on the internet that are non-specifically marketed as “hemp oil.” BEWARE when you see this term, as it is intentionally deceptive. The fact is, the hemp plant contains many compounds that are extracted in many different ways. Here’s the lowdown…
HEMP SEED OIL
As you may have already guessed, the term “hemp seed oil” is a very specific name given to the oil extracted from hemp seeds. Hemp seed oil is very healthy for you because it contains an abundance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These compounds have beneficial effects on our cardiovascular and skin health. The oil also contains several vitamins and minerals. Hemp seed oil contains no THC (the psychoactive compound in marijuana) and it contains no significant quantities of CBD.
Oil from the seed is extracted using cold press methods or using chemical solvents like hexane. Pure hemp seed oil is relatively inexpensive, so if you see cheap “hemp oil,” it may be just hemp seed oil with no CBD. Because of its beneficial nature, hemp seed oil is often used as a carrier oil for other extracts from the hemp flower.
Other compounds can be extracted from the hemp plant for various purposes. CBD (Cannabidiol) is obtained from the flowers of the hemp plant. Pure CBD is a white substance often referred to as “isolate.” A full-spectrum CBD oil contains many other cannabinoids found in hemp flowers, plus terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals.
Some studies show that full-spectrum CBD oil is more effective than CBD isolate for some conditions, what researchers coined “the entourage effect.” The entourage effect is based on the theory that the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds of the hemp plant can complement each other for a more pleasant effect. Hemp flower extracts are obtained in a variety of ways. Compounds from the flowers are extracted using carbon dioxide or chemical solvents like hexane.
At Blue Goose Botanicals, our full spectrum CBD products are made with organic hemp extracted using carbon dioxide and not harsh solvents. Our tinctures (coming soon) can be made with organic, cold pressed hemp seed oil, so you can experience all of the benefits of the hemp plant.
